cremate mine enemies in a cage of fire!
Tales of the Abyss was generous enough to provide playable characters that can cast kick-ass magic but also
take part in actual combat (and not suck). Jade can use high level magic spells but also has a functional weapon, unlike, say, certain characters who fight
with a kendama. Anyway. That being said, it is entirely possible to use Jade as both a melee fighter and a spellcaster. However, I wouldn't suggest
letting Jade's magic go to waste since he'll essential for enemies with elemental weaknesses, and not to mention magic can do a ton of damage and also
stun the enemy. So using Jade mainly as a spellcaster is a good idea, thus you'll want to set him to use primarily Fonic Artes. Pay attention to enemies'
weaknesses and be sure to command Jade to use the appropriate spell when necessary.
AD Skills are an extremely useful aspect of the game, and though you'll want to get all the AD Skills for each character eventually, there are certain areas
you can focus on. For Jade, I suggest building up his Fonic Attack, which allows skills like Speed Spell. One of the most useful skills is Resilience,
which prevents staggering while casting a spell (P. DEF +60, F.DEF +60, AGL +40), or Glory (P.DEF +60, F.DEF +60, AGL +50, ENH +60), which prevents all
staggering. Just be sure to watch your HP if you use one of those skills. (Note that the best C. Core, Tutti, can be stolen from Nebilim and carried over from
game to game.)
Like I said before, Jade isn't bad in melee combat. If you attempt the Coliseum early on, you'll probably be relying more on strike attacks than magic. Using
C. Cores to build up Physical Attack is always good, especially to add more hits to basic attacks. One trick in melee combat is to use Thunder Lance in order
to make a FOF, and then utilize that to turn Thunder Lance into Lightning Tempest. Also, applying a Grass Chamber to Thunder Lance will enable Jade to steal.
