persona
i'm so good-natured and honest it almost hurts
The first thing you'll notice about Jade is his personality, something that no doubt played a role in his being voted the
third most popular Tales of character.
From the moment Luke and Tear first meet him, he's sarcastic and somewhat disturbingly cheerful. Despite having his landship attacked and crew slaughtered,
Jade remains virtually unfazed and still has a smile on his face.
He never misses an opportunity to make a sarcastic remark or a clever insult.
Even when it comes to royalty like Natalia or Luke, Jade will find a way to get in a subtle jab. Jade may be in the midst of battle or facing a serious situation
and yet still have time to make jokes. He'll go as far as assisting in Anise torturing Guy ("coochie coochie coochie!") and peppering his sentences with
random ♥s.
He seems to be amused by fighting or confusion among the other party members, notably Tear and Luke's "lovers quarrels," giving rise to a
rather sadistic quality in his character.
Jade's constant teasing and apparent apathy are incredibly amusing to players, but mostly frustrating to the other characters in the game.
Few things seem to phase him, aside from matters relating to fomicry and the attempts of the party to strip him at Mt. Zaleho.
(Though, people trying to take your clothes off in the middle of a volcano would probably prompt a reaction from anyone.)
But despite his almost playful actions and nonchalant attitude about many things others consider serious or dangerous, Jade is still a soldier and an
experienced one at that. In battle, he shows a solid resolve and doesn't hesitate to kill his enemies. When faced with decisions, he generally remains cold,
logical, and cynical. Jade is no doubt clever and incredibly perceptive as well. He figures out that Luke is a replica soon after meeting him, and suspects Ion of
being the same early on as well. He picks up on Anise's suspicious behavior, figures out Guy's true identity, and sees through Luke's lie when the hero claims
to be healthy following his attempted sacrifice at the Tower of Rem. So while Jade acts the least serious of the group, he's actually the one who thinks most
realistically. However, he very rarely says what he's thinking.
Of course, we're talking about a person also known as "the Necromancer." Throughout the game, there's always hinting of something more...
sinister about Jade. Rumors that the Third Division Malkuth Imperial Forces is made of up the living dead prove to be lies, but many characters regard the
Necromancer as a force to be reckoned with, even the God-Generals Legretta and Largo. When the party confronts Dist in Keterburg,
Jade's "interrogation" of his childhood acquaintance leaves Dist screaming for mercy, though what actually happened is left to the imagination.
These aspects combined create a character with motives that remain largely ambiguous.
So even while he sticks with the party to the very end of the game, much of Jade's character remains a mystery.
